Toucan Europe Ltd.

1998 - 2000

The sites I designed while working for Toucan are relics from pre-standards days. HTML 4.0 Transitional with a comparatively basic stylesheet. Toucan redesigned its site since then. My old design lasted 4 years.

Accessibility was my priority from the very beginning. However, back in 1998 this simply meant removing all FONT tags from the HTML and labelling images with ALT attributes. My earliest sites were made for Netscape 3. CSS layout was still in the distant future.

For Toucan Europe I developed and maintained a number of ESF funded project websites. Some of them are still online:

A collation of tips, guidelines and resources for web designers, who wish to make their websites accessible to visitors with disabilities and older or assistive technology. Focuses on techniques but includes chapters on evaluation, barriers to access, legislation, usability, writing for the web and more. »

DEMOS Accessibility Guide

A version of the original Jarmin.com Accessibility Guide. This guide includes extra information on accessibility techniques used on the DEMOS site (following the WAI guidelines) and a number of demonstrations on how the site looks under a variety of circumstances. »
